There are a variety of woods to choose from, each with its own unique grain and color. You’ll also need to decide on the finish you want for your hardwood stairs.

Once you’ve chosen the wood and finish you want, it’s time to start planning the installation.

We don’t recommend doing the installation yourself and there are professionals who can do it for you. Keep in mind that installing hardwood stairs can be a bit tricky. Doing it yourself will also void your floor’s warranty, so it’s important to hire someone who knows what they’re doing.

Once your hardwood stairs are installed, it’s important to take care of them. Regular sweeping and vacuuming without a beater bar will help to keep them looking their best. You will also want to use one of our recommended hardwood cleaners to protect them.

Remember to never mop or let water sit on your hardwood.

Tips for Stairs with Hardwood Flooring

For those who spend a lot of time outside or have small children and pets, you’ll need to be extra diligent about dirt and grit. Clean your floors regularly to prevent them from building up and causing the wood to dull and scratch over time.

It’s also a good idea to install a non-slip mat under any rugs, but especially those near stairs. So, if you plan on having a rug near the top or bottom of your stairs, use a non-slip mat under them to prevent accidents. Any sliding rug can be dangerous, but it’s especially dangerous when stairs are involved.

If you have young children in your home, it’s important to take the time to teach them stair safety. This applies to any stairs, whether hardwood or not. Remind them to take it slow and hold onto the handrail when going up and down.
